Svadhyaya and Compasison Circle: Working with Pain

  • Akasha Collective 5810 West 38th Avenue, Suite 3 Wheat Ridge, CO, 80212 United States (map)

When we practiced together this past August, almost every member of the circle recognized: I’m in pain. Sometimes a LOT of pain. And I’m not sure of the best ways to work with it.

The September Svadhyaya and Compassion (Karuna) Circle is dedicated to understanding and more skillfully working with pain of all kinds: physical, emotional, spiritual. As we turn into ourselves, be become less numb. And that is an incredible thing, because it paves the road to healing.

But, as all behaviors meet a need, we numbed our pain in the first place. Disassociated with our bodies, told them what to do instead of listening to them, sometimes harmed them with too much food, booze, exercise, or too little rest, comfort, connection.

It is important to understand the hows and whys of what we’re doing—and not doing—to take care of ourselves. It is about half of the work of making change. But the mind, for all of its logic and analysis can only take us half way.

The heart makes up the other half. Compassion, processing, release, practicing: these are the domains of the body—and the purview of this circle. Time set aside each week for curious and loving self-inquiry and the practice of empathy and compassion, for yourself and others.

An opportunity to heal and foster true, deep, lasting change. An opportunity to practice one of the most fundamental and powerful self-care skills available. Together.
