Svadhyaya and Compasison Circle: Relationship with Food and Eating

  • Akasha Collective 5810 West 38th Avenue, Suite 3 Wheat Ridge, CO, 80212 United States (map)

How many times have you perceived the need to change something in your life, analyzed it, made a plan, attempted to execute on said plan, failed, flagellated yourself, and began again? This diet, that exercise plan, meditating every day, eliminating foods . . . Don’t you think that if losing weight/being fit/living an optimal lifestyle were that simple, you’d have done it already?

All behaviors meet a need. All of them. Even overeating. Even obsessing about how you look. Even falling off of whatever wagon you’re trying to ride. And likely the deeply entrenched behaviors that are sabotaging your healthy lifestyle are so good at meeting your needs that it’s almost impossible to give them up.

It is important to understand the hows and whys of what you’re doing—and not doing—to take care of yourself. It is about half of the work of making change. But the mind, for all of its logic and analysis can only take us half way.

The heart makes up the other half. Compassion, processing, release, practicing: these are the domains of the body—and the purview of this circle. Time set aside each week for curious and loving self-inquiry and the practice of empathy and compassion, for yourself and others.

An opportunity to heal and foster true, deep, lasting change. An opportunity to practice one of the most fundamental and powerful self-care skills available. Together.
